On day 5 of juicing it up and feeling great. Just consumed my first papaya ever, and it was in juice form. I combined it with pineapple and it was one of the best drinks I’ve had in my life. Creamy, silky, sweet perfection. The housekeeper here brings me a fresh young coconut every morning and some fruit. And this huge papaya had been lying on the countertop since it arrived – I had no idea what it was lol. Just decided to crack open the bad boy and juice the hell out of it. When I was in papaya juice heaven I inquired on facebook what the hell it was. Papaya and I are now bff’s.
Today I’ll explain a little more about juice feasting, detoxing in general, and why Saar and I chose to juice up our lives.
What The What? Juice Feasting?
I’m sure you’ve all heard of juice fasting, mainly because I blab so much about it. Juice fasting is abstaining from solid foods and drinking only (freshly made/unpasteurized) fruit and vegetable juices for a certain amount of days. Juice feasting is the same, with the only difference being making sure to drink large quantities of juice (minimum of 4 liters/quarts for a woman). In doing so, you are showering your cells with nutrients, getting adequate carbs and proteins (yes!) and calories, so you can sustain on just juice for a long time and keep being active and productive while doing so.
For shorter periods of time juice fasting is OK, for anything longer than a few days I would highly recommend to feast feast feast your heart out. Juice feasting is not about deprivation in any way. It’s about abundance, baby! On a juice feast you are ingesting (many!) more nutrients than at any other point in your life. Because of this, detox symptoms (fatigue, headache, rashes, etc) are minimized as well.
Honestly, I am now on day 5 and haven’t experienced any detox challenges -that I can think of- so far. Of course, eating a clean diet before embarking on a fast greatly helps with this…
Coolness. But why ‘detox’ in the first place hmmm?
Because all the cool kids are doing it!
That, and because our bodies are stuffed up from decades of storing excess toxins. On a daily basis we are exposed to a scary amount of environmental toxins. In/on our foods, in our houses and cleaning materials, in our clothes, in the air we breathe, in the grooming products we use. Our bodies can handle large amounts of those toxins but definitely not all. When our liver has reached it’s capacity for dismantling and expelling for the day, the other toxins are prevented from damaging our vital organs by storing them in extra fat cells and holding on to extra water. Hellooo stubborn pounds (and that’s just the least of our problems).
To add to the problem of our toxic environment, we have refined away much of the nutritional value of our foods and replaced it with ‘empty calorie’ foods or otherwise just calorie-dense (as opposed to nutrient-dense foods) and added artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings, conditioners, etc. This poor quality diet-combined with extensive use of antibiotics and medicine and agriculture may have predisposed many of us to experience a kind of “internal pollution”. Even if your diet is top notch healthy now, think back a year, or 5, or 10. How healthy was your lifestyle then? Did you eat organic food? Did you smoke? Did you eat Mac Donalds ‘food’? Toxins stored in your body, in the cells and in your large and small colon, are very likely to be still there.
These stored toxins can cause acidity, headaches/migraines, lower back pain, mood swings, chronic fatigue, skin problems, dull and frail hair, mental fog, and more, and can eventually lead to chronic illness. Getting rid of stored toxins will make you feel like a fresh new person.
By (juice) fasting your body now has the time and energy (that it would normally spend on digesting and assimilating food and moving waste through your colon) to trace old, damaged cells, break down stored toxins, and expose all of these. Also all old matter in your small and large colon can now finally be evacuated (it is said that the average person holds 2-5 kg/5-10 pounds of undigested food and waste matter in their bowels. This is not unlikely seeing as how the surface area of your bowels together is massive).
At the same time, you are infusing your cells with tons of nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants, many of which are needed for repair and renewal and to help neutralize the stored toxins. Pretty rad aye!
Juice Partners in Crime
Saar and I are both health nuts with a special interest in detoxification (and traveling, and reading, and writing, or so it seems). Last year I exclaimed I wanted to do a juice feast. With her. In South America. Together. She was game. So, things have changed a little since then but the idea is still the same. Saar moved to Canada pour l’amour (they speak French up there, no?) and I decided my trip to paradi, errr, Bali, would be the perfect time and location for some soul searching and feasting. Bien!
But Saar and I are still doing this together. Sharing our experiences, struggles (which?), joys and ponderings. Aaaand we’re happy to announce we are producing a… (drumroll please)
Juice feasting for an extended period of time is truly an amazing experience and we felt like this just had to be documented and shared with the world. So all of you who are curious to the bone, or wanting to try a juice fast yourself but would like to know what you’re getting yourself into , can read from day to day how we felt emotionally, physically and spiritually. We also document through photo’s and of course our daily intake of juicy goodness. I am super excited about creating something like this and the process of daily journalling has also been fun and good for me.
And More To Come…
There is more juicy news coming your way so stay t-t-t-uned.!
Last but not least, please feel free to ask us any questions you have surrounding juice feasting or our juice feast (via comment, email, carrier pigeon….), and check out Saar’s post on our juicy trip!
