Hi guys!
Did you all have a fabulous weekend? Mine involved a bit too much partying but I definitely had a great time. Healthy living and decent foods weren’t really on the forefront of my mind this weekend so I’m afraid I don’t have all that much to blog about
! I do have to say I really liked the responses to my Raw post. I had no idea so many of you are consciously adding some more fresh foods to your diet already, kudos!
I am coming to realize more and more that proper food combining is helping me a lot with keeping my tummy at ease. I am finding myself becoming much more in tune with my body, lately. A couple of days ago I made a really yummy lunch but soon after I bloated up like a balloon, got burpy and flatulent, and downright uncomfortable. Also, I have come to realize that your, ehm, gas… isn’t supposed to stink! Seriously, it’s odorless now, unless I eat something that makes my stomach go bananas on me. It’s really much easier to notice these discomforts when you’re not experiencing it basically every other day and have grown accustomed to it!
The offender:

Crunchy Chickpea Salad
* mixed greens, a drizzle olive oil, pepper & salt (optional)
* baked chickpeas
* raisins (unsulphered)
* chopped nuts (I used Brazil nuts & macademias)
* olives
* sprouts
What is also making a huge difference: not snacking on nuts 24/7! Like I mentioned before I am quite a grazer and I like to munch on nuts and fruit pretty much all day long, between meals. After reading The Beauty Detox Solution I realized this probably contributed to me feeling bloated, gassy, full & uncomfortable so often (nuts are hard to digest and fruits should be eaten alone, and not too close to other foods groups). Now I try and stick to main meals and snacks much more, with hardly any munching in between, and I don’t have that feeling of being full, stuffed, all day long anymore, which is such a relieve! Between meals I focus on drinking lots of water and tea and I feel less restless as well because of it. And finally, last night I cooked a lovely, simple dinner for me & a friend which also ended up not sitting too well with me. I did look up if legumes and kamut (grain) went well together and it turned out they did (apparently, legumes, although rich in protein, can be grouped in the starch category). I am not sure what caused this discomfort, maybe it’s because the dinner was all cooked (but I’m hard-pressed to think so) or perhaps because I haven’t been eating two dense foods together for some time now. Oh well, it still tasted amazing and I plan on finding out eventually what works best for my & my bellay
.
Silky Smooth Coconut Risotto
* Kamut
* Coconut milk (full fat)
* Coconut oil (preferably)
* Coconut butter (optional!)
* Broccoli
* Carrots
* Mushrooms
* Zucchini
* Sundried tomatoes
* (Baked) chickpeas or chopped nuts
Chop broccoli and carrots. Cook Kamut in coconut milk and a little water and add the broccoli and carrots. Cook for ~15 minutes, stirring frequently. In the meantime, heat coconut oil in a wok and stirfry zucchini and mushrooms until browned and tender. Add to the pot of kamut when it’s finished cooking. Chop up some sundried tomatoes and add to the pot. Lastly, add some (baked) chickpeas or some chopped nuts for a nice crunch.
Delish! Tastes great served cold the next day too!
More eats I’ve wolved down lately:
Lotsa these:

* Sprouts

* Small handful mixed greens (with a little lemon juice, pepper & salt)
* Olives

Oh my you look so cute in that last picture!
thanks for sharing all these wonderul recipes. my salads are quite boring compared to yours
Have you heard about the latest EHEC drama? Because of it the German government recommends not eating raw tomatoes, cucumbers, and salads until further notice. This.Is.Torture! I’m craving a salad so bad right now.
Lately I’ve been trying to focus on properly combined meals, also eating my fruit separately, but I’m really struggling with my protein intake. I’m aiming for at least 60 grams per day, but even though I include some eggs, cheese, tofu, and soy yoghurt, I’m failing most days. My sunwarrior order is on its way, maybe that will help me, but until then, any ideas?
hmm I did catch a glimpse of the EHEC news but please enlighten me further? if I remember correctly its a strain of e coli? another wonderful example of why industrial farming SUCKS. until then, I’d simply throroughly cook your food! you can still get plenty of veggies in as long as you cook them properly
.
as for protein, well, I am not a fan of promoting boosting protein intake but your goal of 60ish grams seems really reasonable. but why count or track? it’s important of course to get all your daily nutrients in but I think longterm its so much easier/healthier to do this by eating enough and varied, eating wholesome and most important, eating intuitively. you wouldnt go around tracking your daily vitamin A intake, or your zinc intake, would you? even though these nutrients are just as important and we all are of much higher risk of being deficient in either of those than protein! (as a sidenote: do you really track every single thing you eat? people often grossly underestimate the protein found in veggies, fruits, nuts, grains, etc!)
if you are still concerned 1-2 T protein powder a day can come in handy. also, grains can add up. whole wheat pastas are high in protein, and so are quinoa and kamt (see above recipe!). also add nuts and legumes to your diet! x
EHEC is a very fierce strain of e.coli: Infection often leads to hemorrhagic diarrhea, and occasionally to kidney failure. There have been a few deaths in Germany, source of infection is still unknown. I do get lots of cooked veggies, but I really miss salads, cukes, and tomatoes.
I’ve had the feeling that I might be getting not enough protein, so I tracked everything for a few days. And I was right, if I don’t pay attention, I don’t even come close to 60 gr. And it does have an effect on how I feel.
Thanks a lot for your tips! Thankfully, Sunwarrior has arrived. Woohoo!
Thanks so much for writing about how your stomach feels after you eat certain foods. I have a very sensitive stomach and am also trying to figure out what food combos are best… As always, great post!! I look forward to reading every one
thank you!!

Great to see so many lovely salad recipes! I read this blog while munchin’ on a salad
. Last week I already made some salads for lunch (and/or dinner) when I was at home, but today (or I have to say last night) I finally had the courage to make a salad and take it to work. I was a bit scared the salad wouldn’t be that tasty after 5,5 hours out of the fridge, but it still tasted great! I made one with red lettuce, cucumber, roma tomato, pickle, radish, some hummus(y stuff I bought at a biostore) and dried fruits and seeds. I certainly will do this more often! A work they asked me if I was kinda crazy, because I dared to eat salad, tomato and cucumber (EHEC), but as far I know, it only appears in Germany or with people that’ve been in Germany lately, so I just wash everything very thorough and still enjoy everything. Sad thing is the EHEC seems to come from a biologic grower in Spain.
this post is amazing! SO many bright and fresh recipes!! ive never made risotto!!
