May I call you “detox queen” from now on? Seriously, you’re doing amazing!
My fav vegetable is probably tomatoes. When they’re in season, I have them almost every day. Carrots and zucchini are close runner-ups.
My own detox didn’t go so well. I felt very tired and exhausted most of the time, took a long nap almost every afternoon, had some nasty headaches, etc. I know, it’s only been four days, which is probably too short, but I don’t want to continue this detox any longer. I really miss some of my favorite foods (bread, pasta, eggs, cheese). I’m starting to feel deprived and cranky, which is not good at all. I’ll still try to eat more raw fruit and veg, but I also want to enjoy an occasional treat, e.g. a piece of cake.
On a side note, I also lost 2 lbs during those four detox days. This was not my intention, as I’m not overweight.
Hey Sue don’t be discouraged. Detox symptoms are, actually, the norm! It really means your body is getting rid of that junk, it’s only logic it will make you feel a bit sluggigh for some days. I think thats the downside of such a short detox, you get the downsides without the benefits (feeling healthier and more energized longterm). But you did get something out of it: you’ve decided to eat a little more raw.
This might sound wrong but I personally think losing some weight on a detox is not to be worried about, not even if you’re a healhty weight. Like I mentioned in the ‘why detox’ post, our bodies store toxins in our fat cells. so by losing those fat cells, we lose toxins. you can regain the fat in a healthy, toxin free way later. our bodies are great in regulating that too. I think I am not experiencing such heavy symptoms because I am not losing weight.
ps: I still eat treats almost on a daily basis! only detox friendly ones haha. I ate a raw cheesecake yesterday and I’m going to make raw brownies today!
My favourite vegetables are also tomatoes! I LUUVVVV them, and red bell pepper. But I eat quite a lot of carrots too, and mushrooms!! Argh, I cannot choose.
Oh, and I tried your salad the other day, the one with the red cabbage, olives, macademias and figs and apricots, although I replaced the apricots with fresh dates.
I loved it! It was such a good combination of tastes! I found that my stomach wasn’t having an easy time digesting the raw cabbage though. But nothing serious
Next thing I wanna try is your recovery pudding, sounds delicious!
Haha I think tomatoes and bell peppers are my least favorite . oh, and eggplant, brr. I do like cherry tomatoes but definitely not in a salad.
good to hear you liked the salad, I should make it again as well. yeah raw cabbage can be quite hard on the body at first. I even got stomach cramps/nausea from eating any raw vegetables in moderate amounts, now I chomp ‘em down like a champ haha.
I find it really interesting to see what you eat during this detox, and it makes me really want to try it as well. But I do wonder, is it really enough?
You’ve an active lifestyle and this seems so little foodwise. But perhaps I am wrong, curious about your opinion.
And my fav vegetable is at the moment eggplant, but I like champs and carrots a lot as well. And spinach haha.
Besides the food, I find the activities you do very interesting. The sauna, the ass-tube haha, and the time you take for yourself. I really admire that .
Take care!
Hi Amber, I went over the post again and I admit todays food doesnt seem like all that much but I can assure you its plenty . some things you should also know: I am no longer AS active as I used to be, as in, I dont do intense exercise anymore 6 days a week (thank God). I also eat pretty varied every day, some days I have much more snacks. plus I add some calorie dense things to every meal/snack. for example, I top every salad with nuts, and most of the time I’ll also add seeds and oil. those puddings for example may look small but there’s 30 grams of flax seeds and 30 grams of protein powder and a fair scoop of hemp seeds in one serving, alongside a whole banana, a handful of blueberries, cacao, etc . The best way I can tell though that I am eating enough is I am not losing weight!
Interesting enough I had to make some sample day menus for different sorts of ‘alternative diets’ for school 2ish weeks ago. one healthy and all organic, one ayurveda, etc etc. the all raw diet, close to what I eat now, had already 1900 calories without an evening snack. and thats just salads, shakes, crackers. but the best part was seeing that also ALL nutrients were obtained at already 1400ish calories, no other diet did that. I was impressed!
My daily salads typically include: romaine/spinach/spring mix, carrots, cucumber, tomato, avocado, red onion, sunflower seeds, and sprouts. I’ll add some cheese if I feel like indulging (usually feta, but sometimes goat or parm). You can find more on my blog! (Including my easy vinaigarette! )
I LOVE eating so much raw food these days. I crave salads daily.. and I think that’s a really good thing! If I skip my green smoothie for the day I can definitely tell I have less energy. I have also been noticing these knots in my tummy that you speak of after eating breads (w/gluten) – so I’m going to start cutting back (I’m already down to eating bread 1x a day) foods w/ gluten and see how I feel!!!
Glad you are loving the detox! Have a happy weekend
Looks like your detox is going really awesome, keep it up!!
I left an update regarding the detox before:
“Hey babe!
Update regarding the detox..
- I didn’t drink any black tea or coffee this week
- Going to Bikram yoga in about an hour (it’s been about 6 weeks- with turkey and all)
- Subbing milk for soy milk ( damn it’s much cheaper in Holland, I went to get some stash;) )
- subbing yoghurt for soy yoghurt ( i even like the taste better)
- adding chia seeds to my eats now
- subbing meat with veggie burgers and faux meats
The only thing I’m not able to commit to this week is “no alcohol”.. I usually drink alcohol about once a month and am trying to make it even less..
But i got free tickets to” Sensation white” with my girlfriends, so I’m gonna have a couple of drinks tonight..
Sometimes Life just happens.. Next week: No alcohol for sure! ”
I’m working(doing a fair now in maastricht) for ten days, so it will be difficult for me to keep the detox going.. I did my best though, at the fair I only eat amazing fresh salads (you can choose your own toppings),soups, fruit salads and yoghurt..
I’ve brought rice cakes, dried figs, raisins and dried chickpeas to the hotel for healthy snacking..
I’ve made the decision that I want to run the 1/2 marathon in Amsterdam the 16th of october, and I went to 2 bikram yoga classes (they were so tought but amazing!!I start training after New York.. Any tips?
Hey girl sorry I havent been commenting that much lately bc I am os swamped! But as you can see I am trying to catch up now hehe.
So proud of you! still going well? and how was sensation? the boy introduced me to it and I LOVE it, was there with new years in germany last year.
So cool that you’re coming here to run the half marathon! I am planning on running it as well so we could meet up . You could probably frind all sorts of training plans online but my strategy is always just to take good time (so I wont feel pressured) and run 3-4 times a week. 1-2 long runs 1 recovery run 1 tempo run (shorter distance, but higher speed). you could also include interval but I hate it hehe, good lucj!
It’s not going perfect.. As you know I have a very strange life sometimes But I do believe that small changes make a big change in the end..
So I just keep on working on the little things.. )
Sensation was amazing!! I have never been to an event like that, i usually don’t really like them.. But I had such a blastie.. I’m defenitely doing it again next year..
Btw If you’re into sensation, you should try “tommrowland” in belgium this summer.. It’s the best!!!
Yes, I wanted to go for the “Antwerp 10 miles” again this year but it’s already starting in april.. A bit too soon for me, I want to be fully trained.. I made a workout schedule on “myasics”, but will take your tips into account ))
Hi Maureen, mine’s from philips and it was €100 on wehkamp. I have no experience with others of course but I love this one .
how exciting that you’re also going to do a detox! any spesific plan you’re following?
x
I am loving reading about your detox! I am hoping to do one asap and I am getting so many good ideas from you How do you know what veggies/fruit go well together for juices??
Veggies I eat daily are celery, kale and spinach!
kale is out of season here already! cant find it anywhere, just as I was warming up to it :s
I don’t! I just try, try & try again, hehe. I find most juices turn out quite palatable anyway, I dont have that with smoothies. and if I screw a juice up, i’ll add some (extra) lemon & ginger and all is good in the world again
I didn’t react on your items of this weekend, so I will do it now. Sometimes it’s very hard to keep up with your almost daily new posts!
I eat tomatoes, cucumber and carrots almost daily. Those are easy to take with me. During the week I eat as much as possible veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, red cabbage, red bell pepper, onions, bean sprouts (taugé), mushrooms, etc.
My detox is still going great, but I fell off the wagon with the item: no alcohol. I didn’t even think about it when I took the drinks, but at a certain point I rememberd I am detoxing. What struck me the most is that on some occasions (I was at a party) I just take a drink without even thinking about it. That’s something I want to work on. On the other things on my list I do very well I think:
- no coffee, alcohol, black tea
well, no check because of the drinks, but no coffee and no black tea
- less animal products, no dairy
check!
- no refined, processed sugars
check!
- as little processed, refined products as possible
check!
- low GI fruits
check! (but I bought bananas this weekend, because they are great for smoothies etc.)
- herbal & green tea
check!
- chew your food!
check!
- no/little water with food
check!
- light to moderate exercise most days a week
still needs some improvement, but I worked out more already
- include some: yoga
still needs some improvement
- supplements: b12 (already take these), D
check!
I still have to improve my working out schedule. When I’m busy it’s the first thing I let go. I have to learn not to skip the work out, but to skip other things. Ah, well. I’m still learning..
It’s great to read about your dexoting. I think you’re doing very well!
you’re doing so well! and don’t sweat it about bananas, bananas are super healthy and not high GI either. eating very low GI can be useful for deminishing sugar cravings and, for example, when you have cancer. otherwise just make sure to be conscious about is all
No, I’m not a vegetarian but I had hair loss in ways that it just isn’t normal anymore. Now i know it’s probably because I ate too little and especially too little healthy products. (I am, no, I was a jojo-ing champion, and eating healthy for me was eating 1000 kcals. per day…. resulting in bingeing now and then) I am taking a vitamin B complex since 12 months or so and my eating habits have made some big positive changes since that time also. My hair is groing like crazy now and I think I can stop with the vitamin B complex, but I’m still too affraid the hair loss will return. So funny to see all those short hairs showing up. Even my hair dresser said that there’s groing new hair.
So the reason that there’s B12 on my list, is that I copied and paste your detoxing list and added/removed/changed it until it’s my list (but I forgot to adjust the B12).
I embrace bananas again. I just missed them to much and they are super healthy! My sugar cravings dissapeared now that I hardly eat any food with processed sugars, so I think I deserve them .
Nice to read that I’m not the only one who has to improve on adding yoga Nobody is perfect!
Haha, you inspired me to try again and it worked really well! I just put in a little less coconut and added a little more patience! Had some atop some steel cut oat porridge for dessert! It chased my dinner of a vegan spinach and ricotta (sort of!) quiche…yummm..
May I call you “detox queen” from now on? Seriously, you’re doing amazing!

Where are those Nakd bars made?? I haven’t seen them in the states. Sounds like Lara bars??
I checked for you and it says: gleefully made in Wales

ah brussel sprouts are amazing! I used to stirfry them with soysauce and pepper so much and eat them with tempeh and noodles. mmm
Hey Sabine,
I was wondering what juicer you are using? Want to buy myself one as well, since I want to start a detox myself!

How on earth did you get your coconut butter so silky and luscious!!?!?
I have tried but it comes out a lumpy and not that great!
I guess its because I use a Vitamix! though with my old food processor I got pretty good results too
(just takes 381410 x longer
